Notre-Dame-d'Espérance: a church in Cannes, a Gothic masterpiece in Le Suquet
At the top of the hill of the Suquet The church of Notre-Dame-D'Espérance in Cannes stands proudly. Listed Historical Monument Since July 28, 1937, this late Gothic church has been a must-see during your visit to the City of Festivals. Beyond its remarkable architecture, the main attraction lies in the incredible panoramic view that it offers. Prepare to discover its fascinating history and to be amazed by the exceptional panorama opening onto the Bay of Cannes, the Old Port and the Lérins Islands.

A historic monument in the heart of Le Suquet
Le Suquet is nothing more and nothing less than the oldest district of Cannes. It is therefore normal that it houses the most beautiful and oldest jewels of the city. Among them: Notre-Dame-d'Espérance. This church of Cannes established on the Castre Square watches over the city from its promontory, like a spiritual and historical guardian.
We have to go back to 1521 to discover its secrets. It was on this date that the first stones intended for its construction were laid in Cannes The church was built to replace the Notre-Dame-du-Puy church, became too small to accommodate all the parishioners. The work lasted more than a century, as it was not completed until 1627, although the original deadline was three years. The reasons for this were invasions that constantly interrupted the work, as well as the plague epidemic.
The architecture is inspired by the Gothic style while the porch is a nod to the Renaissance movement. The square-shaped bell tower is Romanesque in style. It is this architectural eclecticism that makes this church unique.
Inside, it is difficult not to fall under the spell of this immense Italian organ of Parvie from the 19th century. Of neo-Gothic inspiration, the buffet has been the subject of a multitude of restorations, the most recent of which dates back to 2014. The side walls of the church house several chapels, each with its own story. Originally, these spaces were assigned and decorated by the brotherhoods of artisans and trades of Cannes in the 17th and 18th centuries. They are true galleries of religious art presenting:
- paintings evoking the lives of saints and biblical scenes such as the famous representation of the death of Saint Joseph.
- Many wood carvings for both finely crafted altars (including the altar of the Saint-Pierre chapel, entirely sculpted).
- Special mention is often made of the century-old musical nativity scene exhibited at certain periods, reputed to be one of the largest of the Sulpician type visible in a church in France.
