The Church of Our Lady of the Snows

The Church of Our Lady of the Snows It owes its name to a miraculous event attributed to the Virgin Mary. According to tradition, on the night of August 4-5, 358, in Rome, the Virgin appeared in a dream to Pope Saint Liberius and a patrician named John. She asked them to build a sanctuary where snow would fall. The next morning, the summit of the Esquiline Hill was covered in a blanket of snow in the middle of August. The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore was then built on that site.

The history of the Church of Saint Agnes is intertwined with that of the village. The parish church of Saint Agnes was consecrated in 1271 by the Bishop of Albenga. In the 14th century, the inhabitants gradually began to abandon the castle and settle lower down, giving rise to the present-day village. It was in this new settlement that the church dedicated to Our Lady of the Snows was rebuilt in 1575.

Inside, several works of art and liturgical objects bear witness to the history of the place. On the high altar stands a remarkable 16th-century gilded wooden tabernacle, a gift from Ignace Léotardi, Baron of Sainte-Agnès. The church also houses a 17th-century statue of Saint Agnes, as well as several anonymous paintings created between the 16th and 18th centuries, likely from the Menton school of painting. Two imposing chandeliers, gifts from Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace of Monaco, also catch the eye.
