Learn about its history before visiting Gourdon

Overlooking the Loup Valley and the Gorges du LoupGourdon is located about forty kilometers from Nice and its famous Promenade des Anglais. It borders the towns of Bar-sur-Loup, Courmes, Tourettes-sur-Loup, Cipières, and Caussols. This village has embodied an exceptional defensive position for millennia. It was first mentioned in 1035 under the name of GordoneIt was originally a Roman camp, the imposing ramparts of which still remain today. Over the centuries, the medieval castle has experienced many dramatic events: rebuilt in the 12th century by the Counts of Provence, it passed into the hands of the prestigious House of Grasse before becoming the heart of the village. While the French Revolution reduced its towers and keep, the building was saved by the liberal ideals of its then-owner, Jean-Paul I de Lombard. Marked by Queen Victoria's visit in 1891, the village has managed to preserve its character despite tragedies, such as the deadly landslide of 1907 during the construction of the Gorges du Loup, finally opening its doors to visitors in 1950.

Experience unforgettable hikes in Gourdon

For lovers of nature and wide open spaces, Gourdon is the starting point for legendary trails offering breathtaking panoramas of the French Riviera and the Gorges du Loup.

The Road to Paradise

This is undoubtedly the most iconic hike in the area. This historic trail, once used by villagers and their pack animals, connects the village of Bar-sur-Loup to the eagle's nest of Gourdon. In the past, the hamlet of Pont du Loup had no cemetery, forcing residents to bury their dead in Gourdon, which rises to an altitude of 800 meters. The coffins were transported by mule over a 500-meter elevation gain, which is why the villagers said they were taking their deceased "as close as possible to paradise."

The route takes 3 hours, covers a distance of 8,5 km, and has an elevation gain of 552 m. It starts at the Bar-sur-Loup Cemetery parking lot. From there, follow the GR51 trail to the Saint Claude Chapel. Continue along the paved road, then turn left until you reach an oak grove. Head towards the Loup Canal; at the intersection, follow marker 302 and cross the footbridge over the Gourdon valley. You will then emerge onto the Chemin du Paradis (Paradise Path). Continue on the GR51 trail until you reach the Foulon Aqueduct. You will soon arrive at the steps leading down to Gourdon.

The Haut Montet circuit

For those who want to gain some altitude without excessive effort, the Haut Montet Circuit is a must-do loop starting from Gourdon. This panoramic hike takes you to the highest point of the coastline, where the limestone cliffs meet the azure sky. The highlight of this walk is discovering the paragliding launch site. Gourdon is a world-renowned free-flight spot, famous for the quality of its thermals.

Throughout the journey, you will pass through contrasting landscapes:

  • Karst geology: The limestone expanses sculpted by time are crisscrossed by a network of streams that disappear into the Embut de Caussols, a fascinating geological phenomenon where water rushes into the depths of the plateau.
  • Pastoral life: This area is an active grazing zone. You will likely encounter flocks of sheep. It is essential to respect their peace and quiet and stay on the paths to preserve this ancestral way of life.

Discovering Gourdon Castle and other wonders

Gourdon is widely renowned for its panoramic views. Beyond that, this hilltop village has other treasures to offer through its exceptional built heritage, a testament to centuries of nobility and Provençal life.

Gourdon Castle: a jealously guarded treasure

Built as early as the 9th century, this feudal castle has stood the test of time to become an exceptional residence. Long renowned for its medieval museum, its Museum of Decorative Arts, and especially its sumptuous classical gardens designed by André Le Nôtre, the famous landscape architect of Versailles, the estate is now privately owned. Although the castle and its gardens are no longer open to the public, their majestic silhouette continues to dominate the village.

A troglodyte and defensive heritage

Gourdon's military past is also evident on the Cavillore plateau. Overlooking the village are the remains of an ancient troglodyte fortress located on the northeast slope. This strategic site, clinging to the cliff, once served as a refuge and lookout point. It offers a breathtaking panorama that fully justified its role as a sentinel of the French Riviera.

Village riches and local history

While strolling through the cobbled streets, other architectural details tell the story of the community:

  • The Fountain of Memory: At the entrance to the village stands a fountain dating from 1852. A true symbol of village solidarity, it was erected thanks to the bequest of Jean-Louis Cavalier, who had donated 20,000 francs in his will in 1847 to provide public water to his fellow citizens.
  • Notre-Dame Church: This former Romanesque castle chapel dates back to the 12th century. Becoming a parish church in 1610, it was not officially consecrated until May 1792. Its simple and robust architecture invites a moment of contemplation, far from the tourist bustle.
  • The Historical and Naïve Painting Museum: For art lovers and those who appreciate the unusual, this museum complements the village's cultural offerings by providing a different perspective on local history through works with vibrant colours and touching simplicity.
